ELCO boilers boost efficiency at Clayton Hotel Leeds

Three TRIGON® XL 400kW boilers from ELCO have been installed at Clayton Hotel Leeds, providing up to 1.1MW of heat as part of an extensive refurbishment programme.

Located on the south side of the city centre, the renowned high-rise hotel is now benefitting from lower energy bills and higher levels of efficiency.

The original boiler plant had reached the end of its operating life and the hotel required a low NOx alternative. As a result, Bradford-based consulting engineers Redworth Associates Ltd were tasked with designing a new, energy efficient heating system, which was then installed by Complete Pipework Services (CPS) Ltd.

Commenting on the project, Martyn Smith, Consultant at Redworth Associates Ltd, said: “The hotel required a complete review of its existing plant room equipment, following long-term reliability issues and a lack of replacement parts for the original 22-year-old boiler plant. Upon completion of a technical and zero carbon review and, bearing in mind the client’s budget, together with spatial and incoming mains assessments, the decision was made to replace the existing boilers, as well as the flue and primary pipework (to an existing low loss header). After considering all these factors, the TRIGON® XL stood out as the product most suitable to meet the hotel’s heating and hot water demands.”

The installation was completed in October 2022, with work being undertaken throughout the summer months previously, during which time the hotel had to remain open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Given these circumstances, co-ordination between all parties involved was key and a temporary plantroom was used until the new boilers were commissioned.

Martyn continued: “The selected plant had to be small enough to pass through a single standard door opening and the height profile (including connections) sufficient to enable an unhindered installation in a plant space with low headroom. In fact, the main challenge to overcome was unrelated to the boilers but more connecting the flue system. It was a brilliant effort by Complete Pipework Services and their subcontractors during this tricky installation phase.”

He concluded: “The TRIGON® XL boilers have certainly met my expectations – while the support provided by ELCO – especially Sean Ryan – during the design, installation, commissioning and handover phases was exemplary.”

The TRIGON® XL is a significant step forward in heating technology. With extremely flexible configurations, clever design and a range of models available, the boiler is perfect for a variety of commercial applications. Plus, extensive cascade arrangements of up to 8 boilers allow for a combined output of up to 4,560kW.

A major benefit of the TRIGON® XL is modular assembly, allowing a boiler to be dismantled and reassembled in half a working day. All models are cleverly designed to pass through standard 760mm wide doors, making commercial installations straightforward, while factory fitted cargo wheels allow the boiler to be easily manoeuvred into its final position. Further bolstering its credentials, a delta T of 30K allows for easier integration with district heating systems, while maintaining optimum efficiency.
