The decarbonisation of buildings has never been more important. Daikin’s new R-32 VRV 5 Heat Recovery climate control system has been engineered to meet all the demands of modern buildings, including minimising environmental impact.

The UK has committed to achieving net zero by 2050, however the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has warned that immediate action is needed. Currently heating and power for buildings represents 40% of the UK’s total energy usage.

Daikin’s new VRV 5 Heat Recovery system has been purpose built to support the decarbonisation of commercial buildings while also delivering a comfortable and healthy indoor environment. This climate control solution, the latest evolution of the Variable Refrigerant Volume (VRV) technology first developed by Daikin 40 years ago, focusses on reducing both the direct and indirect environmental impact. It also offers unparalleled simplicity and flexibility in design and installation.

Sustainability

With the design of the VRV 5 Heat Recovery system, Daikin has aimed to maximise operational efficiency in real-world conditions. With a 13% increase in seasonal efficiency compared to the previous R-410A generation, the new solution achieves market-leading performance. In addition, Daikin’s VRV systems only have two energy transfer steps (from air to refrigerant and from refrigerant back to air), which minimises the losses and further improves the overall system efficiency.

Furthermore, VRV 5 Heat Recovery has been engineered specifically for the lower Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerant R-32. The GWP of R-32 is just one-third of that of R-410A and also carries heat more effectively, together leading to up to a 71% reduction in the system’s potential direct carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2eq) emissions. R-32 is also a single component refrigerant, which supports the circular economy as it is easy to recover and recycle.

Stretch – built in flexibility

Innovative climate control solutions are most valuable in the push for decarbonisation if they are suitable for a wide variety of buildings and installation locations.Daikin VRV 5 Heat Recovery offers best-in-class design and installation versatility. The system has an extensive temperature operation range of up to +46°C in cooling and down to -20°C in heating. It also offers the widest outdoor unit range on the market, with heating capacities up to 90kW.

To ensure the unit can be installed with ducting to the exterior, in small spaces or behind grilles, it has been designed to deliver an external static pressure (ESP) of up to 78 Pascals (Pa). It also features five low sound steps down to 40 db(A) in sound pressure to allow installation in accordance with urban planning requirements. VRV 5 Heat Recovery allows the same long piping runs as the current VRV range and even smaller pipe diameters, further reducing the required installation space.

Shîrudo Technology

Another key installation and operation consideration is the management and control of the refrigerant. Daikin’s innovative Shîrudo Technology allows complete peace of mind and the ability to integrate climate control into small rooms and spaces without any additional considerations, field supplied equipment or time-consuming studies.

Shîrudo Technology comprises a number of factory-integrated refrigerant control measures. In the unlikely event of a refrigerant leak, it is immediately detected and the affected part of the installation is isolated. This minimises the refrigerant that can leak and means only the units in the affected part of the system will be shut down. This combined with easy validation via Daikin’s Xpress software, means Daikin guarantees compliance with the specific IEC product standard, out-of-the-box.

Smart

The end user benefits are also important to consider in terms of ease of use and individual comfort. Daikin’s highly efficient 3-pipe heat recovery system, which is integrated into VRV 5 Heat Recovery, allows simultaneous cooling and heating and delivers individual comfort control. It provides virtually free heating by transferring heat from areas requiring cooling to those that need heating.

Daikin’s mini BMS, the intelligent Touch Manager, provides both local and cloud-based access allowing building managers to control the building systems from any location via the touchscreen, Intranet or Internet. It also easily integrates climate control and third party equipment into one system to make operation as simple as possible.

Support

The added value with VRV 5 Heat Recovery comes from the support Daikin provides. It offers a wide range of tools to make system design and selection simple. Daikin also provides full project and technical support through its expert teams.

Effective decarbonisation of buildings must now be a priority. A combination of performance developments and technologies means that Daikin’s VRV 5 Heat Recovery is the ideal solution for projects where environmental impact is a priority, including those aiming to achieve BREEAM, LEED or WELL accreditation.

The Daikin VRV 5 Heat Recovery units will be available from July 2022. For more information visit https://www.daikin.co.uk/VRV5HR
